Education, being a fundamental right according to Article 21-A of the Indian Constitution, becomes a dynamic tool for the development of the nation. The National Education Policy 2020 brings focus to the holistic development of the young generation of the country. Sustainable Development Goal 4 of the United Nations seeks to ‘ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’ by 2030. Aligned with this goal, the National Education Policy 2020 becomes the first education policy dealing with the challenges of the 21st century.

The National Education Policy (NEP) focuses on the growth of the nation’s youth, providing them with numerous opportunities that help them to build their creative potential. The aim of the policy is to develop good human beings having moral and ethical values, scientific aptitude, cultural values, courage, resilience, and empathy that help the country’s growth. The National Education Policy reflects this growth. The National Education Policy reflects the ideas of the makers to enhance the educational capacity of the young generation and the educational environment of our country.

The policy also aims to address issues related to gender equality, mental health issues, physical health, social well-being and economic well-being among other things. The policy focuses on removing all the barriers to the educational curriculum in the country and providing the means to achieve the goal of education for all. It also provides means to remove obstacles that hinder the progress of education in our country.

The policy clearly states that ‘the nutrition and health (including mental health) of children will be addressed through healthy meals and the introduction of well-trained social workers, counsellors, and community involvement into the schooling system.’ The word ‘mental health’ is also included and the makers aim to provide quality education to youth but not at the expense of children’s health. It is expressly stated that trained professionals, counselors, and social workers will be available to help the children shape and frame their capacity to learn and live.

The policy is not discriminatory but inclusive in its nature of providing facilities to everyone who is interested in learning. This policy is not gender specific and provides platforms for all genders, including transgender. The government through this policy also takes into consideration the will of the student to study and ensure that students, particularly girls, do not lose interest in the educational curriculum.

Mental Health and The National Educational Policy, 2020

Mental health has become a major issue in today’s world. The mental state of a person becomes an extremely important subject when it comes to creative development and performance of a person. The National Education Policy 2020 acknowledges the importance of the mental state of the students within educational institutions. Providing excellent atmosphere, great pedagogy, infrastructure, awareness and capacity building become important goals of the policy that are aimed at promoting healthy psychological conditions among the students.

Building creative and social capacity is a major goal of the policy. NEP 2020 has highlighted the importance of counseling systems to help students cope with stress and adjust emotionally, which will help with their mental health needs; thereby, enhancing the students’ capacity to learn more efficiently. The policy highlights the importance of managing stress levels of students in educational institutions and provides solutions to address these challenges effectively.

The policy provides for the holistic development of the students by offering choices in their curriculum. Allowing students the freedom to select their subjects maximizes their interest in the curriculum and, in turn, reduces their stress levels. Students are given a wide range of subjects to choose from. The students in secondary education are provided with the chances to integrate art, sports, and science, among other disciplines, rejecting the earlier hard separation of the ‘arts’, ‘sciences’, and ‘commerce’. This will lead to integration and availability of a comprehensive curriculum and the students will be exposed to their own chosen subjects which will maintain their interest in the curriculum.

This policy promotes life skills education, a mental health curriculum, health and wellness clubs, providing great pedagogy, inclusion of teachers with students, and creative methods to enhance the curriculum. These measures will help the students reduce their stress levels.

Gender Equality and The National Education Policy 2020

Right to equality, a fundamental right enshrined in Articles 14 to 18 of the Indian Constitution, states that no person shall be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, religion, caste or place of birth. Keeping this in mind, the makers of National Education Policy (NEP) provide a platform for all the genders, including transgender. This policy recognizes Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs), which includes females and transgender individuals as one of its categories. The National Education Policy 2020 focuses on ‘Equitable and Inclusive Education’, which reiterates the idea that no child should be left behind in terms of educational opportunity due to their background and socio-cultural identities.

Women form a major part of SEDGs and are among those individuals who are not offered the right opportunities at the right time. Providing quality education to women or girls becomes one of the best ways to increase the educational level of the SEDGs.

The policy states: ‘The Government of India will constitute a ‘Gender-Inclusion Fund Fund’ to build the nation’s capacity to provide equitable quality education for all girls as well as transgender students.’ The Gender-Inclusion Fund is provided to states by the central government for providing girls with a quality educational curriculum and environment.

This has led to the setting up of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools in local areas, especially for individuals coming under the SEDGs, with a focus on girls. Additionally, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya is to be bolstered to better serve the SEDGs. The policy emphasizes setting up better school structures, especially for female students which will aid to build them the future they want.

The policy also encourages the role of teachers in reducing the differences between the gender and providing support to the female students. NEP 2020 encourages the recruitment of more female teachers, particularly in remote and rural areas, to provide girls with strong female role models. Providing these strong female role models encourages female students to boost their confidence and motivates them to pursue higher goals.

NEP 2020 recommends ‘Special Education Zones’ to ensure education for the socially and economically disadvantaged groups, which include gender, socio-cultural and geographical identities and disabilities. These zones will be specifically designed to manage the quality education for individuals belonging to SEDGs . The sole focus of these zones will be to create focused areas where policy implementation will be maximized to obtain the necessary change in the educational curriculum and environment.

The policy also prescribes a gender-neutral curriculum in educational institutions, aiming to break down gender stereotypes and specified gender roles provided through history. Including a gender-neutral curriculum will generate a sense of belonging in female students and also promote the concept of equal treatment.

Additionally, targeted scholarships are to be provided to female students. Providing financial aid through scholarships is also one of the focuses of the National Education Policy 2020.
